Welcome Back Matt

This summer, Newton News welcomed back Matt Fortin of Acushnet, MA. In the fall, he will begin his third year at Quinnipiac University, where he will graduate early with a BA in journalism. He plans to stay for a fourth year to complete a graduate program.

Matt first interned at NewTV during the summer of 2017. It was his first internship and he had no prior experience in the field. He hoped to get his foot in the door, learn practical skills and build a portfolio. Matt recalls, “I remember being very overwhelmed last summer during my first few weeks…I had literally no experience in this field. I had never touched a camera. Never edited on Premiere. Nothing. In fact I wasn’t even a journalism major.” All of that changed as a result of his time with Newton News, which he cites as an influence on his decision to switch majors.

Since his first internship, Matt has immersed himself in journalism. At school, he is an associate editor of The Quinnipiac Chronicle. He also hosts a radio show on WQAQ 98.1 and is the executive producer of an entertainment news show on Q30 Television called #THAT. This spring, he interned at The Jerry Springer Show and is spending the summer at NBC Boston.

When asked why he wanted to return to Newton News in addition to his other internships, he said, “While both were amazing experiences, the amount of responsibility and hands-on experience I get at NewTV is so unique and special.” Plus, coming back allows him to truly see how much he has grown in the past year: “After having a year’s worth of journalism classes and experience, I feel much more comfortable, knowledgeable and creative when it comes to producing news packages. I feel very proud of how far I’ve come.”

In the future, Matt hopes to be a news anchor in a major market. His advice to future interns is, “This is a fabulous place to start. You will learn so much and have so many opportunities to make mistakes and grow as a reporter. Take advantage of all the resources at your disposal.”
