Recycling Effort

Recycling Effort

Starting this week, you may notice someone looking into your recycling carts. The reason? The City received a grant from the Department of Environmental Protection to help the city reduce the contamination rate of its recycling to below 10 percent.  The current rate is 18 percent. This amounts in to the city paying over $65 thousand dollars so far this year in fines. The process will last two months and will affect a various recyclers around the city.  The way it works, if you have a contaminated recycle cart, you will receive a warning and specific feedback on what was found.  If, after a warning is issued and the cart contains contamination again, it will not be collected that week and a tag will be left on the cart handle along with a follow-up letter from the city. Confused on what to recycle? Check out the city’s website or the mobile app, Recycle Right Newton.
