Why are Internships Important?

Written by Jenn Adams, News Director

If you ever get the chance to intern in your prospective field, take it. It could make a huge difference in what happens next in your career.

Internships are available for those who want to get a feel for what it takes to make it. In the television industry, internships are essential in order to learn essential skills and build upon those skills to create a final product whether it is a show, a commercial, a PSA or a news segment.

NewTV Internships vs. Other Internships:

ValueJennAt NewTV, we offer hands-on training. This means interns get their hands dirty by actually using the cameras, interviewing people, researching subjects, editing the footage and writing the narrative. At other television stations, internships may involve shadowing people who are using those skills. This type of internship is great too because you will make contacts and learn about the job. By coming to NewTV, one can expand upon that knowledge and actually perform those skills.

Learn What You Like:

Internships are also a time of trial and error. What if you always thought you wanted to be a broadcast journalist but after learning all of the skills you found out you like being behind the camera instead? You can focus your career on being a videographer, or an editor, or a producer. You can weed out what you don’t like and focus on what you do like.

Become the Most Valuable Player:

When you get a job, your varied skill set makes you a valuable team member. Say you’re interested in being a reporter but you have experience using a camera and editing the story. Knowing how to shoot will train your eye on great camera shots and angles. Giving the editor exactly what you want in the story will make things easier for them as well. This is essential in creating a great team and a great story.

We have many types of internships available at NewTV: News, Production, Graphic Design, and Administrative. All you need to do is apply and see where it will take you. We have many NewTV alums out there doing what they love to do and you can too.
