Favorite Television Show Genres

Written by NewTV Staff

It can be hard to find a show to watch in today’s saturated television landscape. You might feel overwhelmed by the amount of options available. It can be useful to know what type of program you like. Today, NewTV staff members share their favorite television show genres.

GenresCompKatie Duval, Director of Member Services: Cooking shows. Alton Brown’s Good Eats is just great and I love Alton’s dry, strange humor. I have about 80 re-runs on my DVR, although production stopped in the early-2000s. Iron Chef has always been a goodie, and my husband and I were lucky enough to meet Iron Chef, Bobby Flay, when he opened up Bobby’s Burger Palace in the Burlington Mall. However, my favorite cooking show is Master Chef. My husband and I also got to meet our favorite contestant, and one of last season’s runner-ups, Jason Wang. Fun fact: he is a music teacher in Newton!

Steve Russo, Director of Operations: Sci-Fi. Because it shows technologies that do not exist but lets you imagine a world in which they do.

Noreen Moross, Director of Production Services: Miniseries, I just love them.

Jessica Leff, Digital Marketing Specialist: I really like dramedies. My favorite type of show is an hour-long show that has some humorous elements. Also, I don’t need the show to have any sort of supernatural elements. I think I enjoy shows like this because they reflect a fantasy version of real life. Our lives can be somewhat dramatic, but never as dramatic as what is portrayed on television, but there are also lighter, happier moments, which more serious shows seem to let fall by the wayside. Not everything in our everyday lives is a life-or-death situation.

Cheryl Uttaro, Office Manager: HGTV.

Eugene Foygelman, Production Coordinator: It's a tossup between sci-fi and comedy. Sci-fi is harder to pull off on TV if the show doesn't have the biggest budget, plus viewership isn't usually very high so it creates an unfortunate feedback loop.
