NATOA 2018

Written by Director of Government and Educational Media

NATOA18 2Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love and birthplace of our country, was the backdrop for this year’s annual NATOA (National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors) conference.

During these challenging times, convening blocks away from Independence Hall, where our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, served as a tangible reminder of our nation’s beginning and what role community media plays in preserving freedom of speech and transparency in government.

Attending national conferences is a great way to network and gain industry perspectives. NATOA represents the interests of municipal government entities that provide broadband, cable, and local media-related services. As technology and the means by which we access services evolve, the decline in cable television subscribers continues. This will require our industry to seek new revenue sources and build audiences beyond cable.

Streaming on social media, engaging in real time with viewers, covering non-mainstream issues and telling community stories will continue to offer media centers opportunity. Throughout the week, I saw productions from around the country. It’s invaluable to hear first-hand accounts of how others use their equipment creatively to captivate their audiences.

NATOA18 1NewTV was honored with a first place award for our Decision 2017 Election Night Coverage. This is the second national award received for our coverage of Newton’s local municipal election. NewTV’s team will continue to build on these honors, looking for ways to be innovative in the future.
