Where Real Life Happens

Written by Noreen Moross, Director of Production Services

Autumn has arrived and with it a new season of television and cinema. Everything old is new again. A fully bearded Alex Trebek debuted in his 35th and last year as host of Jeopardy. Candice Bergen is back on CBS as Murphy Brown, and Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga grace the silver screen in the fourth version of the Hollywood classic A Star is Born.

Fall also means midterm elections, and this year your vote is more important than ever before, no matter who you are affiliated with. There is such divide and turmoil in Washington. Nationally, all 435 House of Representative seats and 35 of 100 Senate seats will be chosen. Here in Massachusetts, Geoff Diehl wants to unseat Senator Elizabeth Warren and Jay Gonzalez hopes to upset the very popular governor Charlie Baker. There are 3 ballot questions that voters will consider.

Question 1 is patient to nurse limits. I am sure you have seen the ads for and against. The nurses’ union says it will result in increased patient safety and the hospitals say it will result in longer wait times and even the possible closing of some hospitals.

Question 2 would create a citizens commission to push a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision on campaign financing.

Question 3 proposes to repeal the 2016 state law that banned discrimination against transgender people in public places.

All three questions require the voters of Massachusetts to do their research and vote on Nov. 6, because the outcome will be felt throughout the state.

So turn on the TV and enjoy the new season of comedy and drama, buy a ticket to the movies and escape into the world of cinematic magic. More importantly, do your civic duty and vote on Nov. 6, because that is where real life actually happens.
