Skype from our Studio

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of witnessing NewTV’s Skype capabilities in our control room for a show episode that was close to my heart. A year ago, I visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam with my sister. I have always been interested in the Holocaust, so I’ve been to many museums and read many books on the topic. I thought the Anne Frank house was extremely well presented and I was excited that Skype would allow Jay Sugarman to interview a guest from this amazing museum on his show, Museum Open House.

So, you’re a member of NewTV and you’re creating some great content. Maybe you’ve been a member for years and your show is well established. Maybe you joined within the last year or two and you’re just getting your footing. Either way, you are putting in work to turn your vision into a reality. Don’t you want as many people as possible to see it? Of course your project airs on NewTV in a few time slots and it is uploaded to NewTV’s website. But, if there were a way you could expand your reach, wouldn’t you want to do that? Enter social media.

Greeting a World of New Possibilities

This week, NewTV hosted its first ever Member Meet and Greet. We opened the night with tours for newer members, and let the members mingle with one another and the staff. Executive Director, Bob Kelly and I then gave some opening remarks and we watched a video, which highlighted some of the many benefits our members have here at NewTV.

NewTV Studio is a Hit!

The NewTV studio is hopping! With six new studio shows and counting this year, the total number of community-produced studio programs has risen to eighteen. That’s the most that has ever been produced during my time here, and the excitement to make more isn’t stopping

When I was in college, I took a writing-intensive class called Media Literacy (defined as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media). As part of the course, I wrote an extensive paper about a television show that is close to my heart: Ugly Betty. I started watching the show with my sister during its final season. I was a high school senior and she was a freshman. Each week, we watched a current episode but we also purchased the previous three seasons on DVD and watched one after school each day. At the same time, friends of ours since we were born who were also sisters watched the show together each week. They had been watching since the beginning.

Studio Productions: The Turnkey Solution

Many times, when new members come into NewTV, they want to get involved right away but they don’t quite know where to start. More often than not, I will suggest that they begin by taking the studio production classes and volunteering on a crew. Why? When you work in the studio, everything is 80% set up for you. You don’t need to worry about getting location releases, recording outside versus inside, transferring a lot of bulky equipment, setting it up, then breaking it down, etc., etc.
