Is Snapchat Dead?

For those who don’t know, Snapchat is an app that allows users to send temporary photos or videos to others. Over the years, its capabilities have expanded to allow for text chats, stories (videos or photos that all of a user’s contacts can see that last 24 hours) and branded content. At any point, the recipient of a snapchat can take a screenshot, but the sender will be notified.

So, you’re a member of NewTV and you’re creating some great content. Maybe you’ve been a member for years and your show is well established. Maybe you joined within the last year or two and you’re just getting your footing. Either way, you are putting in work to turn your vision into a reality. Don’t you want as many people as possible to see it? Of course your project airs on NewTV in a few time slots and it is uploaded to NewTV’s website. But, if there were a way you could expand your reach, wouldn’t you want to do that? Enter social media.

A big change hit the Twitterverse this week when most users saw their character limit expand from 140 to 280. This concept was introduced in September, when a select group of users were allowed to start tweeting with 280 characters. Now, everyone is eligible, unless they are using the site in Japanese, Korean or Chinese. This is the first time Twitter has changed their character limit since launching in 2006.

#APostInReview

Because of what I studied in school and what I do at NewTV, I’m always looking at other social media posts from other companies with a critical eye.

#tbt to being Nostalgic

I’m sure you’ve seen it somewhere.  Maybe it was on Instagram, maybe it was Twitter or maybe even Facebook. In any case, you’ve come across the hashtag “tbt” or “throwback Thursday” at some point. #tbt is one of the top five most-used hashtags on Instagram, and its popularity has spread to other social media sites. Just in case you aren’t familiar with it, Throwback Thursday is a posting trend where users share memories, usually in the form of photos from their past. This phenomenon is full of nostalgia.

The Power of a #Hashtag

If you’re on many social media sites, most notably Twitter and Instagram, (and even on Facebook and others), you’ve definitely seen hashtags (#) being put to use. Putting a hashtag before a word or phrase with no spaces makes it clickable, and as long as your account isn’t private, allows it to be searchable by anyone looking for more information about that topic. Think of it as a method for people to more easily find and share tweets about or pictures of a certain subject. It also helps make posts more easily searchable.

From Generation to Generation

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to chaperone my high school youth group from New Jersey’s trip to Boston. They arrived on Thursday and I met them that evening. After some free time, the teens listened to a formerly homeless man speak. He is part of the Faces of Homelessness Speaker’s Bureau of the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance. The next morning, they volunteered at a food pantry and learned about Panera Cares. I met them for dinner and remained with them for the rest of the weekend. On Saturday morning, we volunteered at the assisted living branch of Aviv Nursing in Peabody, MA. From there, we went to the Northeast Arc and threw a “birthday party” for adults with special needs. The teens ran bingo and led an arts and crafts project, then sang happy birthday and distributed birthday cake. After that they enjoyed a private tour of Fenway Park and free time at Faneuil Hall. Sunday morning, they split into two groups; the group I was with went to Hebrew Senior Life Assisted Living Facility in Brookline to work with the residents to make sandwiches and assemble toiletry bags. Next, we picked up the other teens and distributed the supplies to homeless people in Copley and Boston Common. After a full weekend of community service and exploring Boston, I went home feeling happy and exhausted.

Value of User-Generated Content

Have you ever seen a brand encouraging their audience to participate in promotion of or discussion about their product? For example, have you seen a Twitter post where the New England Patriots asked you to take a photo of your pet in Patriots gear, upload it and use their suggested hashtag? Have you seen a Facebook post where Dunkin Donuts asked you to take a video of yourself with your Coolatta? Have you looked at a BuzzFeed article and seen a circle on it that says “Add Yours”? All of these are examples of potential user-generated content. User-generated content (UGC) is content (i.e. text, video, pictures, audio files etc.) that was made by the people who use an online system or website. Usually, for something to be defined as UGC it has to be available to the public.
