Skype from our Studio

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of witnessing NewTV’s Skype capabilities in our control room for a show episode that was close to my heart. A year ago, I visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam with my sister. I have always been interested in the Holocaust, so I’ve been to many museums and read many books on the topic. I thought the Anne Frank house was extremely well presented and I was excited that Skype would allow Jay Sugarman to interview a guest from this amazing museum on his show, Museum Open House.

NewTV Studio is a Hit!

The NewTV studio is hopping! With six new studio shows and counting this year, the total number of community-produced studio programs has risen to eighteen. That’s the most that has ever been produced during my time here, and the excitement to make more isn’t stopping

Education Channel Blog Beat

As the school year winds down, NewTV’s Education Channel has been active with three new interns working on senior projects. These students are learning about all the aspects of production and then create a project on their own chosen topic that highlights what they’ve learned. In the next few weeks they will go out into the field to capture footage and come back to refine a finished video in the post production process. We look forward to highlighting the videos on the Education Channel in May!

Studio Productions: The Turnkey Solution

Many times, when new members come into NewTV, they want to get involved right away but they don’t quite know where to start. More often than not, I will suggest that they begin by taking the studio production classes and volunteering on a crew. Why? When you work in the studio, everything is 80% set up for you. You don’t need to worry about getting location releases, recording outside versus inside, transferring a lot of bulky equipment, setting it up, then breaking it down, etc., etc.

Crafting The Folklorist In-Studio Look

For the past four years, The Folklorist team has produced 50 different segments that span across various time periods and locations. Sometimes we film at places like Gore Place or on pirate ships, which is always fun and exciting. But, it’s the classic black box studio at NewTV that we always come back to. It serves as our basis for host John Horrigan’s narration, and is also the place where we film our recreations for the majority of our segments.

So, when John pitched us the script for The Great Brant Rock Fire, a major conflagration on the South Coast of Massachusetts in 1942, Angela and I were thrilled to film in the studio once again and come up with a unique style for the story.
