Zoom has become a regular feature in all of our lives as social distancing continues. NewTV members are now regularly producing shows via Zoom, allowing them to produce without having to come into the studio if that’s what they prefer.

At this point, you’ve probably used the screen sharing feature on Zoom or seen it in use. But did you know that feature also allows you to record your own screen and audio? You can do so entirely on your own, no scheduled meeting necessary.

Here’s how to make a screen recording with Zoom:

Log into your Zoom account. On the home page, there’s the option to “Host a Meeting” on the top menu. Hover over that and then select “Screen Share Only.”

It will give you the option to screen record your whole computer or just your desktop browser. Select your whole desktop if you’re trying to create a tutorial using multiple windows or programs.

Then, once you’re in the meeting, you need to turn on the recording option. On the top gray bar, click on “More” to find “Record.” Hit “Record,” and then Zoom will start capturing and saving everything you do on the screen. If you want to talk during the recording, make sure you’ve selected the “Join Audio” option and that your microphone is on and working.

While you’re recording, you also have the option to select "Annotate." This will let you circle and highlight certain aspects of your screen. You can even draw or add text.

Whenever you want to end the screen recording, you can do so by hitting “Stop Share.” Zoom will automatically convert the recording to an MP4 file and ask you where you’d like to save the file. Once it’s saved, you then have a complete MP4 screen recording of the time you spent in the meetiing after hitting "Record."

Making a screen recording is a quick and easy way to create an instructional video. By using Zoom to make it, you're able to capture the screen and do voiceover all in one take. Your MP4 recording can also be easily edited in Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro, and you can always incorporate the recording into a larger project. Whatever you plan to do with your screen recording, Zoom makes the process of producing one simple.
