This photography trick will make sure your photos are free from passers-by, traffic, and other distracting moving background elements. You don't need to download any photo editing apps, and you definitely don't need to know how to use Photoshop! All you need is an iPhone and to follow these simple steps.

Go Live

Turn on Live PhotosActivate Live Photos by clicking the concentric circles in the upper right corner of the camera.

The first step is to make sure your camera app is set to take a live photo. A live photo is essentially a very short video; when viewing a live photo in your photo gallery, gently pressing and holding on the picture will cause the photo to transform into the 1-second video. When editing a live photo in the iPhone's photo gallery, you can toggle back and forth between live and standard, and even change the key photo, or main image.

Activate Live Photos before taking your picture with the icon in the top right corner of the camera. The icon is shaped like several concentric circles. When live photos is turned off, the icon has a line through it. The default setting for iPhone's camera app is for live photos to be active, so if you have never changed this setting, it is most likely already turned on.

  1. Open your photo in your iPhone's photo gallery, and click on the concentric circles icon next to the word "Live" in the upper left corner.
  2. Select "Long Exposure" from the drop down menu that appears.
  3. Enjoy! Any traffic, people, or other moving background elements will be removed from your photo! You can either screenshot the edited image, or simply keep it in the long exposure setting.
