Congratulations to The Folklorist for winning another Emmy Award!
NewTV is proud to announce that our original program The Folklorist has won another Emmy® from The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences/New England on June 1st at the Boston Marriott! Two of NewTV’s longtime members have recently completed their first short documentary about one of Boston’s most significant historic buildings – the Waterworks, Boston’s first public water system. Upon connecting, Ellie Goldberg and Laura Johnson embarked on the enriching, and at times incredibly challenging, journey of taking something inspirational and developing it into a cohesive story. The end product, which Ellie and Laura titled The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum: Big Buildings, Big Machines, Big Stories, depicts a motivationally genuine account of what’s possible with high-end TV production training, some necessary film and editing equipment, and unwavering hard work.
NewTV offers interns from various disciplines unique hands-on opportunities to better prepare them for the working world of TV production. For the second year in a row, we’ve broadened our internship program to include global collaboration with the Wider Horizons Tyrone Donegal Partnership in Ireland. This non-profit organization strives to improve local and cross-border development in Irish counties by removing social barriers and enforcing relationships.

NewTV has long been a supporter of local artists, displaying their work in our gallery, which rotates every month or so. For the last four years, we’ve hosted our popular wine and cheese receptions, which celebrate the new exhibits and allow guests to meet the artists and mingle with their friends and families. The receptions are free to the public and are usually held midweek from 6:30-8:30pm.
What better way to make a name for yourself if you’re an aspiring director, actor, writer, or producer than through a film festival? Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars got their start this way. Directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Joel and Ethan Coen, Kevin Smith, and Wes Anderson all got their initial exposure through film festivals. Film festivals have also been a means for launching acting careers; Luke and Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lawrence all got their starts this way.
December 30th was the first member Video Exchange, an opportunity for producers to showcase their projects for fellow members and receive advice and feedback on their work. The event was very successful and well attended. Participants found the responses helpful and enjoyed seeing what their peers were working on.
One of my goals as the Digital Marketing and Events Coordinator at NewTV has been to improve NewTV's social media presence. For Facebook, this has translated into daily posts that feature a variety of information about what NewTV has to offer. For Twitter, it has translated into tweeting more actively and interacting more with our followers. For LinkedIn, it has translated into posting the type of content that other users would be interested in reading. For Google Plus, it translated into creating our account. And, for Instagram, it has translated into posting pictures more often and trying to tag more people in posts.
NewTV’s first One Week Short Film Challenge has come to an end and what a success it was! First and foremost, I’d like to thank all seven teams that signed up and participated in this inaugural event.
I wanted to first thank all the producers who came to the Producer’s Meeting held on March 4. It was a great opportunity to hear from everyone and discuss some of the upcoming highlights happening at NewTV this year. For anyone not able to attend the meeting, this post will help you catch up on what you missed.
