Always More to Learn

NewTV’s spring class lineup was posted online this week. We’re excited to offer our regular courses along with some specialty workshops, including The Fundamentals of 2-D Animation and Introduction to Adobe Photoshop. Whether you are a new member or you have been around for a long time, there is always something new to learn. Recently, we asked our staff what topics they would be interested in learning more about, and here are there responses:

Another Challenge

There’s something about that “Hollywood dream” that most kids fantasize about on a regular basis, because at the end of the day, what kid doesn’t want to be a famous movie star? At least that’s how I was as a kid. Ever since I was young, I always wanted to be involved in movies, whether it was being in them or making them. So last year, I provided that opportunity to high school students by successfully running the first One-Week Short Film Challenge.

Back to After School

It’s that time of year again; the After School Program is starting up next month! So what exactly is the After School Program? It’s a free, 4-week course for 4th and 5th graders and middle school students, which is held at your school during after-school hours. Students will learn how to storyboard, write scripts and use video cameras to create music videos and public service announcements, which will then be aired on NewTV’s Education Channel!

What's the Word?

A brand new show is coming to the Education Channel this summer called What’s the Word?  and your child can be a part of it! Since I’ve started at NewTV, I’ve always wanted to create and develop a show for kids, by kids, and this show will be just that. It’ll be a great way for kids to learn the inner workings of a news show and it will give them the opportunity to see themselves on TV, and who wouldn’t love that?

Keep on Learning

The most important thing to remember while working in video (and in any profession for that matter) is that you are always learning. I know I am. Daily, I’m online checking blogs for new equipment, techniques or skills I’m trying to improve upon. My weekends are usually spent working on my own projects or helping others with theirs in the hopes that I pick up something and stay sharp. Regularly, someone will ask me a question at NewTV that I don’t have an answer for, so I head online to find it for him or her. Not knowing everything is natural; it makes you better at what you do. Never stop learning; there is always something to improve upon.

Will You Accept the Challenge?

What better way to make a name for yourself if you’re an aspiring director, actor, writer, or producer than through a film festival? Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars got their start this way. Directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Joel and Ethan Coen, Kevin Smith, and Wes Anderson all got their initial exposure through film festivals. Film festivals have also been a means for launching acting careers; Luke and Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lawrence all got their starts this way.
