Innovation Showcase - Elizabeth Freeman Statue

Jay talks with guests State Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli and Gwendolyn VanSant. Mr. Pignatelli represents the Fourth Berkshire District, Gwendolyn is the CEO and founding Director of Multicultural BRIDGE, a minority and women run organization dedicated to promoting equity and justice through education and support for diverse groups in Berkshire County. They’re here today to inform us about the Elizabeth Freeman statue and its recent unveiling ceremony. As we’ll come to better understand and appreciate, Elizabeth Freeman was the first enslaved woman to use the Massachusetts Constitution to sue for her freedom in 1781. Let’s start by meeting our guests, and then hearing all about Elizabeth Freeman’s incredible story and achievements, why and how the statue came about.
